What is the Getting Ahead Class?

The Getting Ahead Class is an 18-week, hands-on workshop that empowers individuals who struggle in poverty reach their fullest potential, develop their future story, and build a support system.

How to lead by example and continue succeeding in life.

Staying Ahead is a mentorship program for the graduates of the Getting Ahead Class who are living productive, sustainable lives, paired with a newcomer to help mentor and lead by example.

Free Monthly Book Giveaway for Kids!

We care about our families and their children. We know that reading drastically develops language skills and increases school readiness. Kids who are a part of the Bridges programs receive a special new book every month.

We help families with transportation!

Lack of transportation is a HUGE barrier for families in need. Through volunteers, community partnerships, and donations we provide our families with vehicles and help with maintenance and repairs.

We have fun and we make a huge impact in the Burlington community.

Volunteers are the foundation of our organization. From childcare, providing meals, transportation of our participants, light labor, and mentorships, we have a variety of opportunities to serve the community. Join us, we’d love to have you!

The Cupboard is a free, walk-in-friendly food bank for individuals and families in need. Enjoy an easy, judgment-free, shopping experience at both our Burlington and Fort Madison locations. No requirements, all are welcome!

Tuesday Nights Youth Night

Youth Nights are a great way for students 3rd-12th grade to have a safe, social setting once per week on Tuesday evenings. The kids will be given a free dinner meal, snacks, games, and a quick lesson in small groups.

Do you know a student who needs a second chance?

We all deserve second chances, and at City Hope it can be found. Students who dropped out of high school can join our free recovery program that helps them get back on track through a part-time online study that gets them a diploma once completed.

DONATE ITEMS

We accept a wide variety of items, from food to clothing to hygiene items. All food needs to be fresh, unopened, untouched, and store-bought. All other items need to be clean and either new or gently used. Please bring your items during our open hours to be inspected before receiving. CRISIS FUND

Our Crisis Fund or “Benevolence Fund” is a generous gift that is saved for those who experience an emergency, a great need, or a tragedy that they need help with. We all know what it’s like to have unexpected tragedies happen, this fund is built up just for those who need a huge blessing.

We are extremely grateful for the love and dedication of our amazing Bridges Kids Volunteers. They are patient and kind and watch over our kiddos so moms and dads can get time to focus on their journey in Bridges!! PRAYER WARRIOR

We believe prayer is powerful and special. The struggles for families in poverty are overwhelming, and prayer is always welcomed. We are so grateful for our Prayer Warriors who include City Hope and our community into their daily prayers. God works in beautiful, mysterious ways and our families who struggle on a daily basis need prayer now more than ever.

SKILLS-BASED VOLUNTEER

Skills-based Volunteering is when a person volunteers their professional skills and/or knowledge pro bono (free of charge). We have had people with all different kinds of talents sharing their skills with us, examples would be: financial advisors, mechanics, dentists,  and those who know how to create DIY household products. TEAMMATE MENTOR

Once an individual completes and graduates from the Getting Ahead Program, we encourage them to join our Staying Ahead program and get paired with a “Teammate”. A Teammate is a “mentor” who will come alongside a graduate and build a relationship on a personal level. Click below to learn more.

MEAL PREP & SERVE

Our meal prep and serve volunteers are extremely important to our Bridges organization. During our Getting Ahead WorkshopStaying Ahead meetings, and special events, we provide food to our participants for free so they can focus on their Bridges journey. We have volunteers make delicious meals and desserts for us and then stay to kindly serve.

TRANSPORT / GIVE RIDES

Many of our Bridges participants do not have access to their own transportation and rely heavily on public transit. Our participants need rides to and from the Getting Ahead WorkshopStaying Ahead meetings, and events. Our Transportation Volunteers would only be asked to provide rides with their consent and only when their schedule permits it. Click below to learn more.

GUEST SPEAKER

During our monthly Staying Ahead meetings, we often have Guest Speakers join us from different local organizations to help our Bridges participants learn something new and grow their resources. We also welcome Guest Speakers that have had a life journey they want to share that may help others in their walk with life. Several times each year, we host community and Bridges events. Many times the events have alot of moving parts and setup and tear down is required. We are so thankful to our Volunteers that come help us with events so we can make it awesome for the community participants. Our mission is to be a major resource for families who experience food insecurity (The Cupboard Food Bank), or who are struggling to get ahead in life. For some people, they have made a series of decisions that have collectively put them in bad situations; for others, they are products of their circumstances. For anyone who wants help getting back on the right track, we offer our 18-week workshop that meets once per week for 2-3 hours called, Getting Ahead.
